Problem 5/18

I am able to find the acceleration in terms of t, and I am assuming that from there I have to either do a dot product of cross product with the arm to solve for t at 45 degrees. Is there an easier way to do it, or do I have to do all that algebra?

no dots or crosses necessary. One you find your alpha just remember the a_t and a_n equations. using those you can solve for omega and then treat it like the velocity formula treating omega as v and alpha as a. Then you can get your t :) yay
