Homework Hint: Problem 6/38


Part (a) of this problem requires an FBD for both the drum and the block. The tension in the cable is NOT equal to the weight of the block.

Note that part (a) of this problem is similar to Problem 6/40, a problem for which a video solution has been posted on the blog. (Problem 6/40 is more involved than part (a) of this problem in that a frictional torque as well as an additional block is present in 6/40. The basic process is the same for both problems.) You are encouraged to look through this solution video as your work this problem.
