Problem 3/187

When looking at the system for this question, do you use just the bullet at the system, or treat both the bullet and the block as the system to find the change in energy? Basically are we looking for the change in energy of the bullet, or of both the bullet and the block?

I found the change in energy for the block plus the bullet and it matched the answers given in the book.

The system is the bullet and the block. Remember the initial velocity of the block is zero so the initial energy is only the kinetic energy of the bullet. The final energy is the kinetic energy of the block and bullet (same velocity).
