The moment arm (L/2) is still supposed to be carried down to the integral third equation, right?

Yes, you are correct.

I have a colleague who claims that he purposely makes errors like this just to see if his class is following his lecture. Although it makes a good story for him, I am skeptical of the truthfulness. I suppose that if I would make such a claim here, you would be equally skeptical!
