i believe i have my equations set up right, i just wanted to know do we use to coeffecient of restitution e=.5 which is given in the previous problem 3/252?

Yeah, You use e = .5 like in the last problem.

I set up e=(Va2-Vb2)/(Vb1-Va1) (where a was cylinder 1 and b was cylinder 2, easier to keep track) and then used maVa1 + mbVb1 = maVa2 + mbVb2 and solved for everything and got Va1 to be -1.12 ft/s. I remembered to convert from lb to lbm...

Is this the right approach? Any ideas what the mistake is?

I think that the -1.12 should be used as Va2 instead of Va1...Va1 is the 0.8 ft/sec shown in problem 3/252.

This gives you
((1.5/32.2)*.8 - (1.5/32.2)* -1.12) / (2/32.2)

which is Vb1 and comes out to be 1.44 ft/sec

hope this helps.
