Final exam question

Prof. Krousgrill,
For the 'kinetic' term in the work energy equation, can we choose two different points for the translational and rotational components of kinetic energy?
Thanks

I would say that you can't choose two different points for the translational part and the rotational part for use in one work energy equation, because that one equation is describing the movement/work/energy transfer of one particular point. You can use two W/E equations for two points though. The best thing to do is two pick either a fixed point or the center of mass to evaluate your situation.

kmjones, I would agree with you. I believe it is in your best interest to pick a fixed point or the COM.

I totally agree, you would just avoid any confusion. Remember though as kmjones has pointed out that if you choose a fixed point or the center of mass that you can eliminate one of the terms in the kinetic term.
